During World War I, Joseph Pilates was held in an internment camp in England caring for sick and injured soldiers. Here he devised his method “Pilates , which he used as rehabilitation to injured soldiers, utilising hospital beds rigged with springs and straps. He also trained uninjured soldiers using matwork exercises. He had excellent results and the soldiers became stronger and more resistant to their hard military life.
Late in 1918, a deadly flu pandemic struck, which killed approximately 50 million people worldwide yet none of the men practicing Joseph Pilates’ exercises got sick.

Muscles cannot work or keep their shape without their fascial envelopes.
